There have been plenty of nationality switches ahead of the March 2026 International Window, here are 10 in particular to look out for.
Paul Wanner
Age: 20
Position: Attacking Midfielder / Winger
Club: PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands)
Paul Wanner had been in the midst of a dual-national battle between Germany and Austria for quite a few years now. Born in Austria to a German father and an Austrian mother, Wanner grew up in Germany and played through all of their youth national teams. He became the youngest ever Bayern player in 2022, making his debut at just 16 years old. Coincidentally, the coach who handed him that debut is Julian Nagelsmann, current Germany head coach. Wanner had been pursued heavily by Austria, with coach Ralf Rangnick inviting him to prior training camps to have him be around the squad without needing to commit. But now he has, and he will be a big addition heading into the World Cup.
Marcelo Flores
Age: 22
Position: Attacking Midfielder / Winger
Club: Tigres UANL (Mexico)
Marcelo Flores had been a part of dual-national debates for quite sometime, being eligible for Canada, Mexico, and England. Born in Canada to a Mexican father and a Canadian mother, Flores first opted to represent his fathers country. His father Rubén Flores was a former professional footballer who moved to Canada in the early 2000’s and ultimately settled down in Ontario. Marcelo was seen as one of the top young prospects in Mexico’s pipeline, coming through the Arsenal academy as a teenager. Flores was handed his debut with Mexico in 2021 and went on to play in 3 friendlies, ultimately never becoming cap-tied. Flores was even named in Mexico’s 2024 Copa América squad, but didn’t play any minutes. Flores then had a second think about representing Canada, with coach Jesse Marsch inviting him to a training camp in November 2025 as a ‘training player’, not pressuring him to need fully commit. But that commitment ultimately came in February of this year, and now Flores is set to make his debut this March.
Wilson Isidor
Age: 25
Position: Striker
Club: Sunderland AFC (England)
Isidor looks like he could be one of the biggest nationality switches this International Window. Isidor was born in France and played with several French youth national teams. With Haiti qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1974, there had been plenty of speculation that the Fédération Haïtienne de Football (FHF) was doing everything they could to secure Isidor and others with Haitian roots services. And they have gotten one of their top targets. Isisdor has adjusted to life well in the Premier League with Sunderland, and at just 25 he looks set to lead the line for Haiti for the next several years. Expect Isidor to form a partnership with current Haiti striker Frantdzy Pierrot.
Elye Wahi
Age: 23
Position: Striker
Club: OGC Nice (France)
The number 9 position has become somewhat of an issue within the Ivory Coast for the last few years. The hope from Emerse Faé and the Fédération Ivoirienne de Football (FIF) is that Wahi can be big part of that solution. Wahi was born in France and represented France at youth-level, and was even a part of the 2024 Gold Medal winning Olympic squad. It looked unlikely Wahi was going to break into the France squad, and he has now turned his allegiance over to the country of his parents. Wahi has a great chance to play a big role for Les Éléphants this summer.
Ephron Mason-Clark
Age: 26
Position: Winger / Striker
Club: Coventry City FC (England)
Jamaica has had mixed success in recent years with dual-national additions from England. There is a huge number of Jamaica eligible players, but finding the right fits hasn’t always been the easiest. With a few new joining Jamaica ahead of their massive push to qualify for the World Cup, Ephron Mason-Clark is one of the standouts. The winger has been a key part of Frank Lampard’s Coventry City side which has run away with the English Championship this season. Mason-Clark has spent all of his career in the lower divisions of English football, but seems to be a late bloomer who could be a great addition for the Reggae Boyz.
Issa Diop
Age: 29
Position: Centre-Back
Club: Fulham FC (England)
Issa Diop had plenty of options when choosing his International Future, but he ultimately landed on Morocco. Diop was born in France to a Senegalese father and a Moroccan mother, and though there were heavy rumors for years linking him to Senegal, he has chosen to represent the Atlas Lions of Morocco. Diop will be in contention to start immediately for Morocco, as they look to prepare for a World Cup with high expectations after reaching the quarter-finals in 2022. Diop is expected to partner Nayef Aguerd in defense.
Emmanuel Fernandez
Age: 24
Position: Centre-Back
Club: Rangers FC (Scotland)
Nigeria have added some serious size and ability on the backline with the addition of Emmanuel Fernandez. Fernandez had spent the majority of his career playing in the lower divisions of English football, but a strong 24-25 campaign with Peterborough United put him on the radar of Rangers in Scotland. Since making the move up north he’s made an instant impact, using his aerial prowess to become a huge threat from set pieces. Nigeria already have history of adding dual-national defenders playing for Rangers, with Calvin Bassey choosing the same path in 2021 when he was with the Glaswegian club. Nigeria will hope for similar success with Fernandez.
Carney Chukwuemeka
Age: 22
Position: Attacking Midfielder / Winger
Club: Borussia Dortmund (Germany)
Though perhaps less speculated than the Paul Wanner decision to play for Austria, Carney Chukwuemeka is set to be equally as important for Austria. Chukwuemeka was born in Eisenstadt, Austria to Nigerian parents, who then moved to Northampton, England when Chukwuemeka was very young. Chukwuemeka went on to be an integral part of England youth national teams, and was a part of the U-19 squad that won the European Championships in 2022. Chukwuemeka will bring strong depth and dynamism for Austria.
Joël Piroe
Age: 26
Position: Striker
Club: Leeds United FC (England)
Since Suriname introduced a ‘sports passport’ in 2019, which allowed those abroad with Surinamese roots to play for the country, the depth and quality of the Suriname national team has increased immensely. They went from essentially being minnows in CONCACAF, to being on the verge of qualifying for their first ever FIFA World Cup. And with all the additions they’ve made in the past few years, none might be bigger than the addition of Joël Piroe. Piroe is a true goal-scoring number 9 who could end up being the last piece of the puzzle for this squad who are on the brink of making history. Expect Piroe to be a starter and key figure immediately.
Rani Khedira
Age: 32
Position: Central Midfielder
Club: 1. FC Union Berlin (Germany)
It’s taken quite literally years of convincing, but Rani Khedira has finally agreed to represent Tunisia at international level. Rani, the younger brother of former German national team member Sami Khedira, has been in the sights of the Tunisian Football Federation for many years. The first major push was ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, an approach which was rejected by Khedira. But now at 32, Khedira seems to want the opportunity to play International Football. Negotiations with new Tunisia head coach Sabri Lamouchi and his German assistant coach Michael Hefele went well, and now the central midfielder is on course to play in a World Cup with the Eagles of Carthage. There is some understandable skepticism about the timing of the decision for Khedira, but the midfielder has a chance to get the Tunisian supporters on his side early with the upcoming friendlies, especially with the team needing a boost after a very disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
